* Wellcome II, p. 144. John Hughes Bennett (1812-1875) graduated M.D. from Edinburgh in 1837. He became professor of physiology at the university in 1848; he was the first to teach the use of the microscope systematically, and to recognise its importance in the clinical investigation of disease. This was the first attempt at the practical teaching of physiology and pathology in Great Britain. . He later became pathologist to the Royal Infirmary and lectured on medicine and pathology (Hist.
