* This work was the first manual for the physiological laboratory published in English and contains detailed instructions for the repetition of dozens of classical experiments in physiology. Being concerned with 'vivisection' it had a major influence on opinion leading up to the Cruelty to Animals Act of 1876.

This is an important association copy with ownership by two of the greatest names in British physiology Ð Sir Edward Sharpey-SchŠfer (1850-1935), a pupil of Sharpey who added his name to SchŠfer after the first world war, and Sir Victor Horsley (1857-1916) the founder of neurosurgery in England.
